Auriga’s Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility is an integral part of Auriga’s daily business strategy.  We invest our expertise and resources in helping to find solutions of the pressing global issues, starting from ensuring a safe and healthful workplace, to conserving natural resources and developing social environment.

In changing economic climate of 2008-2009 our pragmatic approach is to align our strategy with the current economic situation while remaining a source of stability for our employees. Auriga continues to consider as its top priorities:

  • Creating a stable and rewarding working environment
  • Contributing to the environmental sustainability
  • Serving as an example of corporate citizenship in Russian Federation

In addition, the challenges of the recent year have required some re-structuring within the company and made it crucial for Auriga to enrich longer term strategies short-term tactical approaches focused on preserving company stability and offering job positions to our employees.

In particular, we have made changes to the recruitment policies and now offer optimum re-employment opportunities for people during re-structuring or after they free up from the completed projects. At every stage and level of an employee’s career, we actively seek for opportunities to engage that person within our company.

We want our employees to be able to advance their careers at Auriga, and we aim to fill vacancies with internal candidates before we advertise the position externally. Instead of conventional job postings and ads, Auriga often primarily relies on finding the candidates by networking or word of mouth. Prospective employees attend elaborate but informal interviews and meet the team they would be recruited to. On completing the process, the aim is that they fully understand what it would be like working at our company.

Employees and working environment

Auriga HR policies are targeted to enhance working environment and build a team of professionals based on respect, honesty and collaboration.

We do our best to make Auriga a great company to work for by providing a healthy working environment and all-encompassing atmosphere for all employees, praising diversity of opinions and ideas, and valuing their contribution to the company’s success.

Our diversity policy states that every employee should be treated with dignity and respect. We will not tolerate discrimination or harassment and will protect the rights and opportunities of an employee to work and progress. We provide flexible work arrangements for employees with special needs and maintain an HR strategy to encourage employee retention and increase the representation of women, aging workforce and disabled people.

To help our employees balance professional and personal commitments, we offer flexible work options. We believe this approach increases employee productivity and helps us attract and retain a talented, diverse workforce.

We offer our employees competitive compensation and a benefit package. We believe that rewarding employees for superb performance is the key to motivation. In addition to base salary and performance-based incentives, we offer such benefits as:

  • Full-covered Medical Insurance
  • Single use payment in case of death/severe disease of the employee relatives in order to compensate expenses for medical treatment
  • Pre-paid trainings in the corporate Training Center

Openness is one of the pillars of our corporate culture, thus we maintain the lines of effective internal communication between management and employees, keeping our personnel abreast of our progress to motivate them and demonstrate their input into Auriga's achievements. Corporate communications channels include:

  • Corporate newsletters
  • Company intranet
  • Regular meetings with the CEO and senior management
  • Team meetings
  • Face-to-face daily interactions

Auriga's open door policy means open communication in an environment of understanding and mutual respect that creates ground for teamwork, growth, high performance and success across the whole company. Auriga is a company where everyone's opinion is respected. Openness is equally essential for quick resolution of customer concerns and identifying business issues when they arise, as for addressing the changing needs of our diverse workforce.

Learning and growth is another fundamental principle of Auriga. We are devoted to developing our employees and provide the training opportunities they need to reach their full potential and to deliver on Auriga’s business objectives. During the annual performance review, each employee creates a development plan with his or her manager. Our corporate Training Center in cooperation with our HR department helps employees in building an individual career and selecting special training programs in accordance with career development plans and internal training programs.

For example, in October 2009, a set of internal online webinars on embedded development for mobile platforms was organized for Auriga software developers. Apart from bringing technical knowledge, these cross-project trainings allowed our software engineers from different offices to brainstorm on new projects and to learn each other better.

This initiative proved to be very promising and we are currently planning a series of online trainings on various technical subjects, and internal "idea contests" to give a kick-start to new interesting projects.

Auriga encourages the employees to participate in industry networking events and conferences, use the results of researching various technologies and development methodologies in their scientific works and social activities. For conferences we offer organizational support and cover participation fees. For instance, in 2009 software development experts from Auriga took part in the following events:

The publications by our colleagues, based on the expertise gained during projects in Auriga, can be found in various online web-resources and paper magazines. Some examples include:

  • A joint article by Auriga software engineer and the experts from Auriga’s long-term client Pigeon Point Systems, in RTC Magazine: INDUSTRY INSIGHT/Managing Small Modules/ Using I2C for "Behind-the-Scenes" Management
  • An array of articles (in Russian) by our employees were published in 2009 in a well-reputed Russian magazine on IT and automation systems – "World of Embedded Technology", a supplement of “Computer Automation World. Please, refer to the January 2009 issue of the magazine to review the “Embedded Systems Testing” and “Virtual Machine: choice problem” articles (please, note, that articles are available in Russian).

We intend to protect the health, safety and wellness of our employees in our commitment to making Auriga one of the best IT outsourcing companies to work in Russia. It is our responsibility to provide a safe working environment for our people, and we recognize that employees are most productive when they are fit.

In 2009, Auriga offices were certified for Ergonomics and Workplace safety, as fully compliant with the standards defined by the State Commission for Public Health and Disease Control.

Auriga’s HR policy seeks to increase both work and life satisfaction, and employees can bond in relaxed environments during team-building sessions for project teams or corporate events celebrating local holidays.

To reward outstanding performance of individuals or departments, an awards system is deployed in Auriga. Formal corporate awards and informal prizes are given to celebrate employees’ accomplishments and promotions.

2. Climate and energy

Climate change is one of the most critical global environmental challenges facing the planet. At Auriga, we believe that proactive approach is the key factor when addressing the problem of climate change.

The objectives of our corporate environmental policy are the following:

  • To provide a safe and healthy workplace for our employees.
  • To save natural resources by reusing supplies and purchasing recycled materials.
  • To reduce waste using working processes that do not affect the environment, simplify and streamline our office operations, and promote safe and responsible waste disposal.
  • To ensure the responsible use of energy by conserving it, improving its efficiency, and giving preference to renewable over non-renewable energy sources when possible.

This policy is applicable to contractors as well as all Auriga employees, and the workers are instructed to report any environmental, health or safety concerns to the management. Should any issues arise, the managers are to react accordingly.

To reduce the climate impact, Auriga improved energy efficiency and decreased the energy consumption by 5 % in 2009. This result was achieved by improving our use of space and installing more efficient equipment.

We are continuing to reduce paper waste, energy and water consumption in our facilities. A heat recovery scheme has been launched this autumn.

Auriga encourages all its employees to engage in environmental programs and work with the local communities to make a difference. Our project teams occasionally volunteer in local public initiatives, such as territory cleanup and redevelopment.

3. Social investments

Active citizenship is a flagship objective in Auriga. We aim to be a force for positive changes in the communities where we work and live.

As a part of image-building of Russia as a pool of superb talented specialists with superior engineering and scientific skills, capable of and enjoying solving complex problems, Auriga acts as a co-sponsor of the Russian teams in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). The 2009 brought another triumph for the Russian students – Russian team became the world champion, with 3 of 4 gold medals, and 4 of 13 total medals. In 2008, the Russian teams won the world championship with 3 of 4 gold medals, 7 of 12 total medals. During 2000-2007, Russia became the world champion four times, and it came twice as No.2 and No.3 in the world. We, at Auriga, are honored to be part of this process.

Over years our President, Dr. Sukharev, participates in various international IT events worldwide to highlight the strengths of the Russian software development outsourcing industry.

In 2009 Dr. Sukharev:

  • Participated on behalf of RUSSOFT in Gartner Outsourcing & IT Services Summit, held in London, UK with a presentation of Eastern Europe as one of the leading outsourcing destinations. (The roundtable discussion following the presentation was held with the participation of Auriga General Manager Andrei Pronin).
  • Took part as a keynote speaker in the 3rd Global Outsourcing Summit, held in Nanjing City, China. Mr. Sukharev presented a report "China – Japan - USA - Europe - Russia: Opportunities for IT Outsourcing Cooperation", discussing the potentialities of the eventual alliance between Russian and Chinese outsourcing vendors

At present, the development of intellectual potential is among top-priority tasks for Russia. IT leaders worldwide consider that "despite the high level of scientific education in Russia" it is essential “to bring together theory and cutting-edge technologies, as sometimes conventional teaching methods get in the way”.

Education is the foundation of the economic development and prosperous community. Improving quality of Russian IT education, bringing national standards in accordance with the global benchmarks, improving teaching, and increasing access to technology in education are the directions in which we apply our forces.

Auriga:

  • Participates in the Russian Information and Computer Industry Association (APKIT) sessions where we take part in Education issues and training in IT committee. The main goal of the committee is the development of the various projects in IT education sphere, particularly working out of the integrated professional standards in IT area.
  • Assists in development and execution educational programs for students. The Auriga Training Center offers intensive training programs in software development to senior high-tech students, graduates, and postgraduates. The Auriga Training Center is designed around the basis and premises of Moscow State University. It offers intensive training programs in software development to senior high-tech students, graduates, and postgraduates and aims to provide attendees with advanced IT training and hands-on experience in top-notch technologies. With the further development of our Center, the training programs came out onto the new qualitative level – so, since 2006 Auriga presented and successfully conducted four training programs on Linux Kernel Programming. Three trainings were held in the I2IT training center in Pune, India. The trainings were attended by representatives of blue-chip IT companies and engineering colleges such as IBM, Symantec, Mindtree Consulting, ETH, Divinet, Triump Systems, etc. and received a really positive feedback. In 2009, Auriga shared its know-how with software engineers from Russian development office of the leading mobile technology company, Teleca, in a series of online trainings on Linux embedded programming.
  • Contributes to the special recruitment programs for postgraduates, so called "freshers program". Auriga Training Center aims to provide opportunities for recent high-tech graduates and help them to grow into mature software-development professionals with sound technical skills and experience. Conducted by experienced mentors, the need-based training at Auriga is combined with the latest technical expertise and real-life technological challenges. The tuition is free for all participants. The training program in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod has proved to be in considerable demand, with 5 applicants per place in 2009.
